Tiles (Monograms) |
|
A marker of belonging to a select group, the monogram promises the elevation of the mass-produced object, and by extension the individual who owns it, to a unique and rare status. I focus on the monogrammed objects that are sold from home-decor companies. Here these markers of identification represent completely fictional individuals and families. I scan or re-photograph images of the monogrammed objects - the resulting images take varied form: Titles (Monograms/BM Linen White) - I print these images and paint over them with house paint, masking the object and its context, leaving only the monogram – the identifying marker of the fictional individual or family name in the catalog. Titles (Monograms/Tiles) – I crop the image closely to the monogram and have ceramic tiles made with the resulting images, and then group the tiles back into imaginary families. These tiles become concrete markers of the absent/abstract subject. |
